WildBrain Unveils ‘Strawberry Shortcake’s New Look for Upcoming Digital Content & Licensing Collabs

Also Read

WildBrain has unveiled the berry latest refresh of classic character Strawberry Shortcake, ready to headline a slate of new original digital content rolling out for fans beginning this February.

The new content, which brings the iconic Strawberry Shortcake to life in CG animation for the first time, features a live-action/animation hybrid baking show, bite-sized micro-shorts, full minisodes and lo-fi ambience videos. Each piece is crafted to engage audiences across WildBrain’s digital network — reaching families on YouTube and igniting nostalgia from young adults on TikTok and Instagram.

The content announcement comes ahead of New York Toy Fair, where Strawberry Shortcake will be bringing her very own pop-up bakery to the heart of SoHo to celebrate Galentine’s Day. From February 14-15, Strawberry and her “berry besties” will serve up sweet treats to the public, debut exclusive first look reveals across toy, games and plush and dish out delicious giveaways in collaboration with Magnolia Bakery and Little Words Project. Strawberry Shortcake fans are invited to join the bake shop fun at 188 Lafayette St, New York, each day from 11-5 p.m.

Then, at the Toy Fair itself, Strawberry Shortcake’s resurgent fandom will feature alongside brands such as Peanuts, The Cat in the Hat and Peter Rabbit in an industry panel titled “How Entertainment Brands are Leveraging the Nostalgia Boom to Engage Multigenerational Audiences.” Led by moderator Joel Silverman, CEO & Co-Founder of KidsKnowBest, the panel brings together industry leaders, including Kate Smith, WildBrain’s EVP Audience Engagement; Scott Shillet, Peanuts Worldwide’s VP Global Licensing; Ellie Terveen, Dr. Seuss Enterprises’ Chief Operating Officer; and David Sprei, Penguin Ventures’ Commercial Director. Toy Fair delegates are invited to attend the panel on February 16 from 3:20-4:00 p.m. at the Toy Fair University Theatre.

In addition to new content and Toy Fair activations, the Strawberry Shortcake franchise continues to expand its footprint in the toys and games sector with new licensing partnerships brokered by WildBrain CPLG. A global collaboration with MGA Entertainment’s popular L.O.L. Surprise! brand, which has introduced the L.O.L. Surprise! Loves The World of Strawberry Shortcake Tots collection, while a collaboration with USAopoly will see exclusive Strawberry Shortcake editions of Hasbro’s Monopoly and Candy Land games roll out in the U.S. and Canada this spring.

“Strawberry Shortcake is a true icon, beloved by generations around the world. This evolution blends the nostalgia of Strawberry’s classic bonnet-and-bloomers style with CG animation and storytelling designed to captivate both new and long-time fans across generations and geographies,” said Erin Morris, VP, Strategic Global Franchise & Retail for WildBrain. “As we expand the world of Strawberry Shortcake and her ‘berry besties,’ we’re excited to partner with world-leading brands to sweeten the toy and games aisle with new products this year. Fans have told us they love classic Strawberry Shortcake, so we’re pleased to create joyful, fun and sweet experiences across our digital network for today’s audiences — whether they’re discovering Strawberry for the first time or reconnecting with a childhood favorite.”

Development Alert: YouTube Kids Currently Seen On DStv Explora Ultra Is Being Discontinued On Various Platforms

Google integrated YouTube Kids directly inside the main YouTube app for TVs last year. However, the company has continued up until now to run the standalone YouTube Kids app on smart TVs, streaming devices, and gaming consoles.

In July, though, Google will pull the plug on the standalone YouTube Kids app on those devices. According to 9to5Google, the outlet confirmed with the company that the YouTube kids app will be pulled from smart TVs as well as streaming devices and game consoles.

YouTube Kids will continue to exist as a standalone app on iOS and Android devices.

Google's move to remove the YouTube Kids app from those platforms comes shortly after other big changeups in kids-oriented platforms and apps.

Earlier this year, Paramount completely killed off its standalone Nickelodeon app, where kids were able to watch clips and full episodes of their favorite Nick Jr. and Nicktoons shows. A pop-up message told users that they would need to go directly to the Nickelodeon website to continue to access their content. Following that move, Paramount also shut down the standalone subscription platform for Noggin, a Nickelodeon-affiliated brand that provided content for preschool-aged children, earlier this month.

Unlike those platforms, YouTube Kids is not going away entirely. Parents will be able to set YouTube Kids profiles in the main YouTube app and then select that profile in the "Who's watching" section in order to access the YouTube Kids platform. Parental control settings and other YouTube Kids features will still be available within those profiles.

Roundups #50: Dora The Explorer Horror Series Currently Streaming On YouTube, The Bad Guys TV Series Rumoured To Be In Development On DreamWorks And Plants Vs. Zombies Scrapped Feature Film From DreamWorks

Dora The Explorer and Learning With Pibby rip-off

Amanda The Adventurer follows the escapades of the titular character and her sheep friend Woody except it contains more darker themes which is where the Adult Swim original Learning With Pibby tags along.

The project was produced by James Pratt's (Woody) Gaming Design and was meant to give viewers a nostalgic and curiosity feel. The main characters are the centre peace to the whole show with others being plot fillers who are quickly forgotten.

Throughout the show, viewers will be encouraged to help Amanda on her journey if you get the answer wrong she huffs and puffs and as episodes go by you'll see several warning signs until the inevitable end.

The Bad Guys might be coming to a station near you

The #1 movie in the U.S. follows a group of criminal animals who, upon being caught, pretend to attempt to reform themselves as model citizens, only for their leader to find himself genuinely drawn to changing his ways as a new villain has his own plans.

In an interview with Marc Maron (the voice of snake), it was said that a TV series might be in development. A friend of his auditioned for his role and went on to joke about the whole issue. Most of the cast members expressed interest in a sequel.

At the moment, DreamWorks Animation hasn't confirmed anything for The Bad Guys but the idea of a TV series doesn't seem far fetched almost all their movies particularly ones as big as Madagascar and Dragons come with a prequel.

Plants Vs. Zombies movie enters the recycle bin

Plants vs. Zombies is a video game franchise developed by PopCap Games, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts (EA) where players take on the role of a human as they have to defend their home from a couple of mindless zombies.

According to sources, a feature film from DreamWorks Animation was currently underway with several concepts and ideas already planned. The news came at the time the beloved video game alongside Angry Birds were on the verge of extinction.

The first Plants Vs. Zombies game is available on Insidus Games.

YouTube Bans Russia Today (RT) And Several Other Channels From Generating Revenue As There's Calls Have It Removed From Across Africa On DStv, StarSat, StarTimes And TelkomOne

YouTube is blocking state-backed Russian media outlets from advertising and earning money on the platform. As Russian troops continue to invade Ukraine, YouTube told Reuters it’s “pausing a number of channels’ ability to monetize on YouTube, including several Russian channels affiliated with recent sanctions.”

YouTube spokesperson Farshad Shadloo told Reuters that YouTube will recommend Russian state-run media to users less often. Some of these channels — including RT — will also be restricted in Ukraine due to “a government request,” potentially in response to Ukraine digital minister Mykhailo Fedorov’s call for YouTube to block Russian propaganda on the platform.

While YouTube says it’s barring RT from running ads, it remains unclear which other channels have also been temporarily demonetized. As Politico chief technology correspondent Mark Scott points out on Twitter, some state-backed channels still appear to have ads. The Verge asked YouTube for a list of affected channels but didn’t immediately hear back.

The Meta-owned Facebook has already moved to pause ads from state-backed Russian media on its platform, while Twitter suspended all ads in both Ukraine and Russia to help ensure the visibility of public safety information. Russia has since restricted access to Facebook and Twitter. Although Russia hasn’t blocked YouTube just yet, it threatened to ban the platform entirely for deleting two RT channels in September.

RT has been banned in Germany and Poland later in the month as the UK is currently reviewing the channel while Africa is yet to take any legal action.
