StudioCanal Unveils Animated Adaptation Of Controversial ‘The Rainbow Fish’ Children’s Book

Studiocanal is getting behind an animated feature adaptation of Marcus Pfister’s children’s classic The Rainbow Fish about an arrogant shiny fish who learns there’s more to life than glittering scales.

The pan-European studio’s German arm Studiocanal Germany is partnering with Claussen + Putz Filmproduktion and Zodiac Pictures on the feature, continuing a collaboration which has also yielded titles such as The Robber Hotzenplotz, The Little Witch and Heidi.

The book, which has sold more than 30 million copies since its publication in 1992, is a beloved children’s staple but has also stirred-up controversy in the U.S. in recent years amid debate over its underlying message.

In the book, the protagonist is a beautiful but arrogant fish who is shunned when he refuses to share his glittering scales with other fish. On the advice of a wise old octopus, he starts giving up his scales to the point that he only has one left but ends up with lots of friends.

Writer Pfister has said the story is ultimately about the beauty of sharing, but recent detractors have said it sends out mixed messages about individuality, acceptance, coercion and boundaries, in turn sparking debates over cancel culture.

This has not stopped Studiocanal putting their heft behind the animated adaptation.

“The Rainbow Fish carries a universal message that is understood and loved all over the world. It is a great joy for us to reinterpret this special story together with our partners as a major cinematic experience for audiences of all ages,” said Studiocanal Germany co-heads Hooman Afshari and Lutz Rippe.

The creative team also took on board some of the recent conversations to put the original book’s intended core message more clearly to the forefront. This resulted in a deliberate shifting of certain emphases, new characters being introduced, and other adjustments.

The film’s feature-length duration also allowed the team to explore the message of the original book in more depth.

The synopsis for the film adaptation reads: “With his shimmering scales, the Rainbow Fish is the most beautiful fish in the entire ocean. But he is also vain and proud, which alienates the other fish. As a result, he becomes increasingly lonely. When he eventually loses one of his beloved glittering scales, it is none other than the Little Blue fish who accompanies him on the search into the deepest parts of the ocean. An adventurous journey begins – and the Rainbow Fish learns that together we are much braver than alone, and that true friendship is more precious than the most magnificent coat of scales.”

The production has come together in partnership with Germany’s 80-year-old Augsburg Puppet Theatre. It is based on a screenplay and directed by the theater’s veteran puppeteer Florian Moch, who has brought the story’s underwater world and colourful community of fish to life through traditional puppetry, crafting most of the puppets himself.

“Being able to create a contemporary, handcrafted puppet film with The Rainbow Fish is something very special—and a childhood dream come true for me,” said Moch.

A high-profile ensemble has been assembled for the German voices of the beloved sea creatures, including actors Jannik Schümann and Luna Wedler, TV host Tobi Krell, actor Bjarne Mädel, comedian Oliver Kalkofe, musician Bela B. Felsenheimer, actors Andrea Sawatzki, Hella von Sinnen and Mechthild Großmann and content creator Tom Böttcher.

Filming in Augsburg will continue until mid-July, with a German theatrical release scheduled for November 19, 2026.

Studiocanal is handling worldwide distribution and worldwide sales.

StudioCanal And Heyday Films Announce New Pippi Longstocking Animated TV Series

StudioCanal has announced the development of a new animated television adaptation of Pippi Longstocking in partnership with The Astrid Lindgren Company. The series is being produced by StudioCanal, Heyday Films, and Submarine, with award-winning writer Sara Daddy attached as head writer and screenwriter.

The new series will consist of 52 x 11-minute episodes and will be produced in 3D CGI animation. Designed as a fresh and contemporary reimagining of Astrid Lindgren’s beloved character, the series will introduce Pippi’s fearless spirit, humour, and independence to a new generation of viewers. Production is scheduled to begin in October 2026.

Head Writer Sara Daddy comments, “To be entrusted by the Lindgren family and the brilliant Heyday and StudioCanal teams with the keys to Villa Villekulla is such a privilege. As the daughter of a seaman who overturned convention and took me out of school to sail around the world, I have always felt a connection with Pippi. I am having so much fun honoring her fiercely independent spirit, free-thinking ways, and, of course, superhuman strength. With the brilliant wit and warmth of Astrid Lindgren’s voice as our guide, our aim is to ensure Pippi remains a joyful, empowering icon for today’s children. It is a dream project.”

Max Hallén, CEO of The Astrid Lindgren Company, says: “Astrid Lindgren’s stories continue to grow their audience around the world, reaching new generations of children across markets, platforms and formats. Pippi Longstocking remains at the heart of that journey. Her courage, independence and playful way of challenging the world around her have inspired children around the world for over eighty years and continue to do so today. This series represents an important milestone in our ambition to expand the reach of Astrid Lindgren’s stories and create new opportunities for children everywhere to discover Pippi.”

The series will be produced by David Heyman, Rosie Alison and Rob Silva of Heyday Films, the banner behind the Emmy and Annie Award-winning “The Adventures of Paddington” series, as well as the feature films “Paddington,” “Paddington 2” and “Paddington in Peru,” with “Paddington 4” currently in development.

Red-haired Pippi Longstocking is the main character in the eponymous series of children’s books by celebrated Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. She originated from bedtime stories told to her daughter Karin about an anything but pious freckled little girl with boundless energy, strength and bravery.

A testament to Pippi Longstocking’s enduring and timeless global appeal, the Pippi books have sold over 70 million physical copies, been translated into 80 languages worldwide, and continue to sell 1.5 million annually.

In addition to the animated series, a new Pippi Longstocking feature film based on Astrid Lindgren’s classic stories is currently in development. The film will be produced by David Heyman, Jeffrey Clifford, and Rosie Alison for Heyday Films.

StudioCanal will oversee worldwide distribution of the series. StudioCanal Kids & Family will manage merchandising and licensing in France and the UK, while Rights & Brands will serve as the global merchandising agent for all other markets.

Studiocanal And Superprod Team Up For ‘Toto The Ninja Cat’ Animated Series

Studiocanal Television and French production company Superprod have teamed up to develop British TV presenter Dermot O’Leary’s popular children’s book series Toto the Ninja Cat into an animated action-comedy series.

Canal+ And Sky Involved In Production Of New Miffy Animated Series

A new Miffy animated series will go out on Sky in the UK. The deal comes with the much-loved bunny character celebrating her 70th anniversary this year. Sky Kids has picked up the show from Studiocanal and Superights.

Created by Dutch illustrator Dick Bruna – who first drew the iconic character to entertain his young son whilst on a rainy seaside holiday – Miffy has graced a series of picture books that have sold 85 million copies and are now published in over 50 languages. Bruna’s simple but classic design graces a wide range of toys, clothing and merch, with Mercis holding the global rights.

There have been several Miffy shows and even a movie over the years. The new Miffy CGI toon series was produced by Studiocanal, Mercis and Superprod Animation with pay-TV giant Canal+, which will launch it in France.

Miffy runs to 78 episodes of 7-minutes and is in production. The show sees the young bunny and her chums discovering the world around them as Miffy’s positive attitude helps overcome any tricky situations.

The first eps will deliver this September. The core audience is 3-to-5 year-olds, although Miffy holds wider appeal, with the little rabbit character becoming a Gen-Z favorite in recent years.

Studiocanal and Superights are across international sales. Sky Kids programming is acquired by Lucy Murphy, Director of Kids Content at Sky. The Miffy deal was negotiated by Alexander Wright, Acquisitions Manager, and Alia Morsy, Acquisitions Executive, for Sky Kids.

Imrun Islam, Head of Film and TV Licensing UK & Ireland at Studiocanal, said the Sky team have been “enthusiastic and collaborative since the early start of our discussions,” and added: “The deal heralds a new step for much loved Miffy, marking only the beginning on her way to reach to kids and families worldwide.”

Nathalie Pinguet, Deputy General Manager, Sales & Acquisitions, at Superights said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Lucy Murphy and her amazing team. I feel that the Sky teams are passionate about Miffy and I’m sure they will give her a privileged place in Sky’s line-up.”
