HBO Max And Discovery+ To Merge Under The New WarnerMedia And Discovery Inc's New Company Warner Bros. Discovery

Also Read

Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels says the mega-merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia — with an eventual combination of the Discovery+ and HBO Max streaming services — is on track for a mid-2022 closing.

“We’re in the ninth inning right now, in closing that transaction,” Wiedenfels told the Deutsche Bank Annual Media, Internet & Telecom Conference during a session that was webcast. He argued that combining the subscriber acquisition power of HBO Max with the customer retention power of Discovery+ content will “make for a blowout DTC (direct-to-consumer) product and that should certainly drive very healthy revenue growth for years to come.”

Wiedenfels also discussed the direct-to-consumer strategy following the merger of AT&T’s Warner Bros. with Discovery that will see an early bundling of Discovery+ and HBO Max, followed by eventually combining both streaming services into one consumer offering and platform. “We will start working on an interim solution in the meantime. So right out of the gate, we’re working on getting the bundling approach ready, maybe a single sign-on,” he said.

The goal is to get early benefits from the merger. “But the main thrust is going to be harmonizing the technology platforms, building one very strong combined direct-to-consumer product and platform, and that’s going to take a while,” Wiedenfels added.

The Discovery financial chief said most major milestones toward finalizing the merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia had been reached. On Friday, Discovery shareholders formally approved the mega-combination of the factual and lifestyle media powerhouse Discovery with AT&T’s entertainment arm. The final green light for the mega-deal came at a special shareholder meeting held online; shareholders of AT&T, led by CEO John Stankey, do not need to vote on the combination.

Last month, the merger received approval from the U.S. Department of Justice, the key regulatory hurdle for the merger. The European Commission, the executive body of the European Union, had approved the deal in December.

In the big deal, AT&T will spin off WarnerMedia and merge it with Discovery, with AT&T shareholders set to receive an estimated 0.24 share in the new company for each AT&T share held. AT&T stockholders will end up owning 71 percent of the new Warner Bros. Discovery, with Discovery shareholders holding the rest.

During his investor conference appearance, Wiedenfels returned to a familiar theme for his company, with the newly merged Discovery and WarnerMedia entity aiming to become a free cash flow machine. “We’re ready to generate a significant amount of synergies. We’re very bullish on our ability to drive free cash flow and delever the company very quickly, and position us for sustained free cash flow growth for many years to come,” he argued.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav will run the merged giant, with Wiedenfels serving as the new company’s CFO. Wiedenfels said early cost savings will come from reducing corporate overheads from the combined merger assets. And he reiterated that Discovery is eyeing $3 billion in annual cost synergies so far from the merger.

Synergies from combining HBO Max and Discovery+ will take longer to secure as the product and technology stacks of both streaming services had to be combined. “The teams are standing ready and everyone is super-excited to get going,” Wiedenfels said.

Amid an increasing Wall Street focus on the profitability outlook for streaming services, both executives recently also vowed that the merged company would focus on growth in streaming, but not at any price. Wiedenfels promised a “conservative approach” to streaming content spending. And Zaslav said that “we plan on being careful and judicious,” summarizing the approach this way: “Our goal is to compete with the leading streaming services, not to win the spending war.”

According to a user at Digital Forum, Paramount plans to close down music brands MTV Base and MTV Classic a year after the black based entertainment channel BET with cut off and merged onto the streaming service, Paramount+.

MTV Base and Classic (formerly VH1 Classic) launched in 1999 as part of MTV's digital boutique of music channels and throughout its existence several markets such as France and Africa launched a localised brand for Base while other parts got Classic.

According to some viewers in these regions, the brands have become obsolete especially in an era where a platforms like iTunes and Spotify already exist. Just like Africa, even the UK have begun streamlining their offering.

Although, MTV Base performed dismally in these regions it doesn't have much affect for viewers in other regions compared to MTV Classic as the brand is considered outdated in this century. It was one of the reasons Paramount Africa opted for MTV Hits (formerly Music24) and not its predecessor.

If anything, the only brand that will likely get phased out at this point would be Nicktoons as Paramount seems more focused on scrapping non and underperforming channels. On top of reducing various local feeds of some of their brands.

Roundups #30: Boss Baby Returns To Netflix With New Series, Could Imbewu Be Moving To A New Timeslot On e.tv? And Channel Closure Notices On DStv For The 4 e.tv Channels

Netflix and DreamWorks are teaming up for more Boss Baby

The Boss Baby: Back in the Crib is set to debut globally on Netflix May 19, picking up where last year’s feature film sequel The Boss Baby: Family Business left off.

In the latest series, main character Theodore Templeton is framed for embezzlement and forced to turn back into Boss Baby. Now living with his brother Tim and nieces Tabitha and Tina, Theodore must band together with his family to fight against a new group of arch-enemies, the Uncuddelables.

Back in the Crib is produced by Brandon Sawyer and Matt Engstrom, and its voice cast has yet to be announced.

This is the second series in the franchise that Netflix and DreamWorks have collaborated on. The first, Back in Business, ran for four seasons from 2018 to 2020. And Family Business grossed US$ 147 million at the worldwide box office across 3,644 theaters in 2021.

It's possible that Imbewu is going nowhere

As stated earlier, e.tv will be airing a new series The Black Door during Imbewu, could this signal the end of Imbewu or is there more to the story that e.tv is not mentioning?

According to sources, Isono airs in the 20:30 timeslot which was known for international dramas and I haven't watched any BET for a long time and if I had to guess Isono runs for a duration of 23-25 minutes.

Meaning there's extra 25-30 minutes which will likely be used for Imbewu or this new telenovela although a timeslot was provided you can never be certain about anything.

Important notice for DStv customers

To assure viewers that MultiChoice is not kidding about scrapping most of the e.tv channels. They'll soon be adding a channel termination notice on each station.

Interesting enough, these notices target channels particularly on DStv Family and Access:

• eExtra - viewers are encouraged to tune into kykNET & Kie and Mzansi Wethu. (Someone was doing their homework to recommend kykNET)
• eMovies and eMovies Extra - both movie channels so of course same recommendation. Viewers are encouraged to tune into M-Net Movies, Studio Universal and TNT.
• eToonz - basically treated like a preschool channel encourages viewers to tune into Disney Junior and JimJam with the help of Cartoon Network.

Isono has got another head

Earlier in the week, it was reported that e.tv picked up rights to BET's first local telenovela Isono and will be launching a new drama titled, The Black Door in place of Imbewu apparently.

The ideology was that both dramas would fill up the slot of two of the four local dramas seen on e.tv but that's not the case.

According to sources, the series will fill up the 8:30 slot on weeknights which is home to shows such as the 3 Chicago series, Magnum Pi and NCIS: Los Angeles and is currently vacant for the third season of the military drama S.W.A.T.

Potential lineup changes coming to the SABC channels

As reported in the past week, the public broadcaster has pushed the launch for its new channels and OTT service to the next financial year which will end by March 2023.

These new channels are said to be made available on the untitled OTT service as predicted and plans are underway to redevelop the offering across all their television channels and radio stations ahead of the launch.

The public broadcaster wants to have a multi-OTT presence and just like Discovery Inc's Discovery+ they're not setting out to surpass Netflix or Showmax but to be sustainable for the years to come.

As mentioned a couple of times, the rumoured SABC Encore could be different to the one formerly seen on DStv and this info kind of proves my suspicions were pretty accurate.

John Wick cast as Batman in upcoming DC Movie

Warner Bros. Pictures has dropped a brand new trailer for its upcoming action-comedy animated film DC League of Super-Pets, featuring the voices of Dwayne Johnson as Krypto the Super-Dog and Kevin Hart as Ace the Bathound. It will arrive in theaters on Friday, May 20.

The DC League of Super-Pets trailer highlights the partnership between Ace and Batman, who is officially being voiced by John Wick star Keanu Reeves. This comes after the theatrical premiere of the Robert Pattinson-led The Batman film last Friday, which opened to a gross of over $248 million at the worldwide box office, making it the studio’s biggest pandemic opening.

“In the film, Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side,” reads the synopsis. “When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack—Ace the hound, PB the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel—to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the Super Heroes.”

Serena Williams Is ‘Not Giving Up’ On Grand Slam Record Chase

Also Read

In an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, 23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams talks about her rise to tennis stardom, changing the narrative around her father, overcoming racism in tennis and the double standards that exist within the sport.

“I should have been at like 30 or 32” [grand slam singles titles]…I should have had it [the record], really, I've had many opportunities to have it. But I'm not giving up,” Williams tells CNN, and says she’s still aiming to beat Margaret Court’s record of 24.

Although she was forced to miss January’s Australian Open following the advice of her medical team, Williams says she will play at the French Open in May if her body allows.

Williams tells CNN how they aimed to change the narrative that has been grown up about their dad, Richard Williams, through the Hollywood film “King Richard,” which Williams and her sister Venus executive produced.

“Unfortunately, entering a new sport where it's predominantly, you know, White and having my dad have like this villain character, when it just wasn’t true, just having to deal with that my entire career, from day one to the very end, was just really important for us just to tell the truth,” she says.

Williams also talks about how her and her sister overcame the racism that they experienced as tennis players in a predominantly White sport, saying: “We changed it from being two great Black champions to being the best ever, period. And that's what we did. We took out color, and we just became the best.”

Williams has been heavily criticised for showing anger with umpires on the court on different occasions.   Williams said: “There is absolutely a double standard,” given men routinely act out at umpires.

Lastly, she tells CNN: “I am who I am, I love who I am -- I love the impact that I’ve had on people, that I continue to have on people.”

Key quotes from the interview:

Williams on whether she’s still committed to beat Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles:

“I don't know, I still play tennis obviously and I still train and you know, but I think I'm the kind of person who's like, well, honestly, I should have been at like 30 or 32… I've had many opportunities to have it, but I'm not giving up to answer your question.”

Williams on changing the narrative around her father, Richard Williams, through the Hollywood film “King Richard”:

“Unfortunately, entering a new sport where it's predominantly, you know, White and having my dad have like this villain character, when it just wasn’t true, just having to deal with that my entire career, from day one to the very end, was just really important for us just to tell the truth.”

“You know, in order to be an athlete, especially in a single sport, it takes a lot of work, and it takes a lot of dedication, and I look at my daughter and I say, wow, I don't think I could do what my dad did every single day. It's a lot of work.”

Williams on how her and her sister Venus perceived and overcame the racism they experienced in what is a predominantly White sport:

“We changed it from being two great Black champions to being the best ever, period. And that's what we did. We took out color, and we just became the best.”

“We never looked at it as a color thing, or we knew that we were entering an all-white sport, but for us it was like we're entering tennis and we're here to win. And yeah, we had to play harder and we had to be better, but it made us better. And at the end of the day, every time we faced a challenge and every time we overcame that challenge, it created Venus and Serena.”

Williams on the impact she has had on people throughout her career and her passion for what she does now:

“I am who I am and I love who I am, and I love the impact that I've had on people. I love the impact that I continue to have on people. Now the impact that I can have on people through companies that I invest in and having an opportunity to invest in women and people of color, and that is, if I didn't have the passion that I have on the tennis court, I wouldn't have passion for what I do now, and I accept it and I'm excited to continue to have that passion.”

Netflix And CNN International Pull Out Off Russia With More International Businesses Likely To Follow

Netflix and possibly various other streamers halt services in Russia

Earlier this week, the streaming service had announced that it would pause all future projects and acquisitions from Russia, joining a growing list of companies that have cut ties with the country. Netflix had four Russian originals in the works, including a crime thriller series directed by Dasha Zhuk, which was shooting and has since been put on hold. Netflix also recently refused to carry 20 Russian free-to-air propaganda channels that it was required to host under Russian law.

Now, the company is taking an additional step in shutting down its service entirely.

“Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia,” a spokesperson for Netflix said.

The economic blowback that Russia has faced in the wake of its decision to go to war with Ukraine has been intense. Not only is the country grappling with extensive sanctions, but many corporations and organizations have pulled out of Russia. Companies like Microsoft, Apple and Dell have announced that they have suspended sales in the country, while Ikea has closed stores and Nike has said it will no longer fulfill online orders. On the entertainment front, all of the major studios have announced they will stop releasing their films in Russia.

CNN International, Bloomberg and various other news channels halt production in Russia

Global news media said they were temporarily suspending reporting in Russia to protect their journalists after a new law cracking down on foreign news outlets was passed that threatened jail terms of up to 15 years for spreading “fake news”.

BBC said on Friday it had temporarily halted reporting in Russia, and by the end of the day, the Canadian Broadcasting Company and Bloomberg News said their journalists were also stopping work. CNN and CBS News said they would stop broadcasting in Russia, and other outlets removed Russian-based journalists’ bylines as they assessed the situation.

Not long ago, sanctions imposed on Russia by the European Union had led to the global distributor of Russia Today to halt broadcast of the channel to all suppliers, including MultiChoice and TelkomOne.

Believe it or not most of Telemundo's popular shows were derived from somewhere. Take for instance, Lord Of The Skies (El Señor De Los Cielos) which was based on the life of Amado Carillo Fuentes known to viewers as Aurelio Casillas and Queen Of The South which was derived from a book of the same name.

My Heart Beats For Lola joins the never ending list of shows that never ending list with I Love You Paquita Gallego and before you feel like skipping this article take some time to do research on the show and you'll discover a lot more to that series.

Cristina Umaña played the titular character which resembled Carmen Villalobos' Lola Volcan. The only difference was the identity of her father was never revealed as her mom who apparently was a rape victim who died later on the series alongside her aunt died and Paquita had a skin rash forcing her to be homeschooled.

Compared to The Search For Frida, the changes Telemundo made when adapting I Love You Paquita Gallego is very remarkable. If I had to be honest, I'd rather watch the original as the show appears to be more darker.

As mentioned, Paquita's mother died earlier in the show while Lola's mother was there till the very end but was distant throughout the show as she was held prisoner by the lost love. Who do you think filled that plot of Lola's mother in I Love You Paquita Gallego seeing that she passed on?
